Keyboard Pedagogy

The Conservatory at Capital University is the only institution in the nation that offers an undergraduate Keyboard Pedagogy degree. But the distinction doesn’t stop there. The Keyboard Pedagogy curriculum includes unique courses designed to help future teachers establish, market, and manage their own private piano studios. Additional courses in private organ instruction, voice, and conducting give graduates the skills they need to expand their marketability to other community and church music settings.

Perform. Create. Collaborate. Begin your encore with us.

Inspiring future teachers and musicians to use their talents to lift and enrich the world.

Keyboard Pedagogy

Pedagogy is the “art of teaching.” As a pedagogy student, you’ll learn the best practices of keyboard teaching, as well as managing the business of running your own private studio or teaching in another educational setting. You’ll graduate well-prepared to share your love of music through teaching. At Capital, the Keyboard Pedagogy degree offers three focuses: piano, organ, and church music. Because many pedagogy graduates are active in outside community and church work, our program includes courses in organ, voice, and conducting. This added training prepares you for participation in choral and other ensemble groups in your community work. The Keyboard Pedagogy degree is best suited for those who have advanced piano proficiency and who wish to become teachers to pre-college and adult learners.

Experiential Learning

In addition to keyboard training from our distinguished faculty, pedagogy students also take courses that provide hands-on learning including peer teaching, group and individual instruction, and teacher observation experiences. Students will have many opportunities to observe and interact with learners representing different age groups and skill levels.
As a junior in the program, your coursework and internships will focus on pedagogy. The junior year provides a higher level of faculty supervision and as students progress, they move to learning environments with more independence. In the senior year, you’ll have opportunities to develop teaching plans, learn about and write studio policies, and dive into the business side of building and marketing a piano studio.

Program Philosophy

At The Conservatory of Music, our philosophy is focused on providing an exceptional music education that includes hands-on learning experiences, both on our campus and in the community. From our unmatched faculty support and mentoring to the variety of ways you can share your talent, you’ll see the difference we’re proud to offer at Capital.
Our distinguished faculty are gifted musicians, teachers, and performers. They create classroom experiences that are personal and unique to each student. The Pedagogy program is welcoming and supportive, with a healthy balance of motivation that encourages students to achieve high standards of musical excellence. The Keyboard Pedagogy degree program is accredited by the National Association of Schools of Music (NASM).

“I have had many favorite professors who are amazing and impactful teachers. The professor who impacted my life greatly was Dr. Wang. Her guidance, nurturing and wisdom have given me opportunities to learn about music for sure, but also life lessons: working hard, caring for myself and others, being a world citizen and what it means to be a great teacher.”
